Co-Instructor(s) Relationships: Rules and Guidelines

A Web Mentorz Course(s) may have more than one Instructor(s) only for those accounts which are registered as an Institute as these Co-Instructor(s) or Teaching Assistant(s) plays a role in creating and managing the Course(s). This article is intended to guide Institute(s) considering this option toward positive use cases (e.g., co-developing a Course(s) can be a great way to add expertise and a fresh perspective).
We frequently see two main reasons why Institute(s) buddy-up on Web Mentorz:

  1. They’re looking for support with Course(s) creation, development and production
  2. They’re looking for help teaching or managing the Course(s) (e.g., responding to discussions etc.)

Web Mentorz Policy on Co-Instructor(s)

We’re always on the hunt for new ways to leverage our Institutes’ innovation by providing Institute(s) with creative freedom - whether it is to find new ways of creating great content or tapping into each other’s expertise to grow their business. As with all tools and features, the purpose is to use them to benefit both students and other fellow Instructors. However at times, these same tools are abused in order to circumvent open education platform policies on Course(s) Announcements and other tools we provide.

Here are a Few Quick Thumb Rules to Steer you in the Right Direction:

  • DO be involved as a  co-instructor(s) if each individual is bringing in unique expertise in the form of Course(s) creation, development, production, teaching or managing the Course(s).
  • DO make co-instructor(s) visible on the Course(s) if they’re the ones actually appearing in the Course(s) or engaging with students. At least one of the visible Instructor(s) of the Institute on the Course(s), should be the person students are learning from and interacting with.
  • DON’T be co-instructor(s) with the primary goal of exploiting Web Mentorz’s marketing tools or sharing each other’s student base.
    • For example, if an instructor wants to pair up with you after you’ve published your Course(s) just to market to one another’s students, this is against Web Mentorz policies. Remember, if you’re actually interested in marketing each other’s Course(s), you can do so by becoming an Affiliate.
    • If on the other hand, you want to co-develop or co-manage a Course(s) together right from the beginning, that’s exactly why we enable Course(s) to have multiple Instructor(s) from a particular Institute(s), and is totally fine.

When we see instances where an Institute is clearly going against the spirit of Web Mentorz policies in an attempt to violate the terms and conditions and spoil the system or if we see a severe negative impact on the student experience (high unsubscriber rates or refund rates due to instructor or co-instructor behavior) it will be considered a violation of our policies.

Everyone makes mistakes, so most first violations will result in a warning. Subsequent violations may result in loss of access to product features (e.g., Course(s) Announcements), account suspension, or in rare cases, account termination.

Remember, if you are planning to add a co-instructor to your Course(s) in your Institute(s), we recommend that it be someone whom you know and trust and the conduct of the said co-instructor shall be entirely your liability. Please take extra care and consideration if you are splitting revenue with or giving editing rights to a co-instructor. Keep in mind that Web Mentorz’s contractual relationship is strictly between Web Mentorz and each of the Institute(s). Any co-instructor(s) business agreements related to a Course(s) remains exclusively between the co-instructor(s) and the Institute(s) and Web Mentorz will not be responsible for any such contract entered by you.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser as you browse the internet. They can be used to collect, store, and share data about your activities across websites, including on Web Mentorz. Cookies also allow us to remember things about your visits to Web Mentorz, like your preferred language, and to make the site easier to use.

We use both session cookies, which expire after a short time or when you close your browser, and persistent cookies, which remain stored in your browser for a set period of time. We use session cookies to identify you during a single browsing session, like when you log into Web Mentorz. We use persistent cookies where we need to identify you over a longer period, like when you request that we keep you signed in.

Why does Web Mentorz use cookies and similar technologies?

We use cookies and similar technologies like web beacons, pixel tags, or local shared objects (“flash cookies”), to deliver, measure, and improve our services in various ways. We use these cookies both when you visit our site and services through a browser and through our mobile app. As we adopt additional technologies, we may also gather additional data through other methods.

We use cookies for the following purposes:

Authentication and security

  • To log you into Web Mentorz
  • To protect your security

For example, cookies help authenticate your access to Web Mentorz and prevent unauthorized parties from accessing your accounts.

Preferences

  • To remember data about your browser and your preferences
  • To remember your settings and other choices you’ve made

For example, cookies help us remember your preferred language or the country you’re in, so we can provide content in your preferred language without asking each time you visit.

Analytics and research

  • To help us improve and understand how people use Web Mentorz

For example, cookies help us test different versions of Web Mentorz to see which features or content users prefer, web beacons help us determine which email messages are opened, and cookies help us see how you interact with Web Mentorz, like the links you click on.

We also work with a number of analytics partners, including Google Analytics who use cookies and similar technologies to help us analyze how users use the Services, including by noting the sites from which you arrive. Those service providers may either collect that data themselves or we may disclose it to them.

You can opt out of some of these services through tools like the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

  • To customize Web Mentorz with more relevant content

For example, cookies help us show a personalized list of recommended courses on the homepage.

To learn more about targeting and advertising cookies and how you can opt out, visit www.allaboutcookies.org/manage-cookies/index.html.

Please note that where advertising technology is integrated into the Services, you may still receive advertising on other websites and applications, but it will not be tailored to your interests.

For other devices and operating systems, you should review your privacy settings or contact your platform operator.

What are my privacy options?

You have a number of options to control or limit how we and our partners use cookies:

  • Most browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can change your browser settings to decline cookies by consulting your browser’s support articles. If you decide to decline cookies, please note that you may not be able to sign in, customize, or use some interactive features in the Services.
  • Flash cookies operate differently than browser cookies, so your browser’s cookie-management tools may not remove them.

Trust & Safety FAQ

Why are there rules in the first place?

Web Mentorz is committed to ensuring that students have a safe and engaging learning environment, and Instructor(s)/Institute(s) are set up for success. Our rules exist to ensure we protect student’s learning experience and enable positive, healthy interactions between Instructor(s)/Institute(s) and students.

How will I be notified of a strike?

You'll receive an email from policy@webmentorz.com about the strike, the reasonwhy you received it, and the consequences. We'll be thoughtful and fair about how we determine if there's a policy violation as well as how we apply consequences. We encourage you to provide context and ask questions. We’re here to help, you'll have the opportunity to speak with someone on our team.

You'll also see that your feature has been disabled when you attempt to use it, and see a notification that says your access to the feature has been temporarily suspended on some or all of your course(s) due to a policy violation.

What happens if my co-Instructor(s)/teaching assistant(s) has a strike?

If your co-Instructor(s)/Institute(s) has a strike, then all the courses that your Instructor(s)/Institute(s) teaches will be affected.

What if my co-Instructor(s)/teaching assistant(s) has a strike and I remove him/her as an Instructor(s)/teaching assistant(s) from my course?

If you remove your co-Instructor(s)/teaching assistant(s) who has a strike, and you don’t have a strike, then your course will revert back to having all your features enabled.

How long are the strikes valid?

We'll re-evaluate the strikes on your account on a six-month rolling basis.

How are you monitoring and catching bad behavior?

We hear from our students and Instructor(s)/Institute(s) who write to policy@webmentorz.com. We also proactively monitor on-site behavior and reach out to students and Instructor(s)/Institute(s) when we identify policy violations.

Does every Instructor(s)/Institute(s) get Strike 0 to 4 or does it depend on the nature of the violation?

In most cases, Instructor(s)/Institute(s) will see a linear escalation where they'll get a warning, and then three strikes. If there are more than three strikes we'll ban access to Web Mentorz and un-list the courses from the Open Education Platform. However, we reserve the right to escalate the consequences if the violations are severe.

WebMentorz Review System Guidelines

The primary purpose of student reviews on Web Mentorz is to help prospective students evaluate if a course is a match for their learning goals. Our review system empowers students to find and enroll in the courses that are most likely to fit their needs. Written reviews also provide Instructor(s)/Institute(s) with direct feedback which can help them improve their content.

In order for the review system to be effective, students must trust that the system is fair and that Web Mentorz is a neutral party. Instructor(s)/Institute(s)can flag reviews, but Web Mentorz will only remove them if they meet the specific, objective criteria outlined below.

Web Mentorz removes reviews in several scenarios:

1. Reviews removed by the Automatic (Spam) Review Filter: If a review, along with the behavior of the reviewer, scores high in our algorithm as potentially spam, the review will not appear. Web Mentorz scans all student ratings and reviews to identify those that are likely to be inauthentic. We incorporate many data points to ensure course feedback reflects the engaged, unbiased opinions of learners with a genuine interest in the course material.

Occasionally, reviews left by friends and family have been hidden by this filter. If you believe that a review has been removed incorrectly, you can let us know at policy@webmentorz.com. While we are unable to provide any details about the filter, we will investigate to confirm that everything is working as intended.

2. Negative reviews reported as policy abuse: Anyone on Web Mentorz can report a review as an abuse of Web Mentorz’s policy, at which point our policy team will examine whether the review meets one of the criteria that warrants removal.

3. Reviews acquired improperly(change with ours): Instructor(s)/Institute(s) are expected to follow Web Mentorz’s rules against manipulating or influencing reviews, as well as the spirit of the review system as a tool for students to help each other evaluate courses.
