Air Force Day: IAF celebrated its 88th Anniversary.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is celebrating its 88th anniversary on October 8, 2020. The IAF was established on October 8, 1932.

It is the air wing of the Indian Armed Forces. The Indian Air Force is ranked at fourth position with respect to the complement of personnel and aircraft assets. The primary mission of the IAF is to secure the Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare in the case of aerial conflicts.  It was established on 8 October 1932 as a part of British Empire. British Empire honored the India’s air service during World War II by prefixing Royal.  Thus it was called as the Royal Indian Air Force before independence. After India transitioned to a Republic country in 1950, prefix Royal was removed.

The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the IAF. The operational command of the IAF is led by the Chief of Air Staff who is an air chief marshal with a four star.
